Every year I go through this phase. The phase when I get bored with my hair and need to make a decision on what to do with it. So many questions pop to mind. Do I cut it? Do I grow it? Should I change the style? How drastic should the change be? Will I leave it natural or colour it? If so should I go all out and jump on the pastel locks trend? So many questions, all overwhelming! First world problems.

There is is a method to my madness and in my crazy weighing up of decisions, I have decided to dedicate myself to making my hair look as lush and healthy as possible. Perfect runway ready hair so good it looks like I just stepped out of a commercial. Ok not quite, but one can dream.

Many would doubt my dedication but with our awesome friends over at KMS in charge of our runway locks this year at MBFWA, I have confidence that I will achieve my goal. With their expertise and delicious hair products mine and our model babes locks will be perfectly soft, shiny and voluminous. Not to mention they have teamed up with us to design some very cool WAH print hair brushes and capes! Hair prep in style!

Someone once said that your hair is a ball gown you never take off…how true that is. Take care of your locks ladies…and gentlemen because you will hopefully have them for the rest of your life.

TROPICAL TANS

Whilst we love to chase the never ending summer and catching a tan whilst doing so, we know that it can’t be summer for everyone and even if it is, you must make sure that you aren’t exposing your skin to potential sun damage. That’s why we always look for that extra glow with a little bit of fake tan.

There is no shame in rocking the faux tan, in fact we LOVE that we can achieve the same sun-kissed, beach babe look from a cream or liquid, without having to lather on the sunscreen or endure the pain of sunburn and recovery time. NOT to mention, creating crazy tan lines because you accidentally missed spot on your back or ended up with a handprint from the old slap stick application approach. No thank you! This whole fake tan thing sounds about right to us.

Which is why every year we make sure our model babes at the We Are Handsome MBFWA runway, and not to mention our campaign “workation” to the Maldives, are rocking the best tropical tans with the help from our awesome friends over at St Tropez. And why wouldn’t we? They are the go to experts on the subject of tanning, whether we are applying backstage or inn our bathroom, their expertise is not glossed over. Just the other day they taught us how to apply fake tan to our face without making mistakes or causing breakouts!

It’s come to my attention that I have a slight addiction. An addiction that although I would like to say is exercise, has my bank account being exercised more than I. Yes online shopping. You’ve got me. I’m addicted. I admit it. Couple this with my constant use of digital and social media platforms and you would find me gone for hours just happy browsing and making mental lists of everything I need…..want, I mean want.

A Handsome Rendition: The Colour Of Whimsy

We caught up with the gorgeous and ever talented artist Jessica Guthrie, who recently sketched her own renditions of our latest collection The Tropic Of Babylon. We asked a few questions about her life as a creative artist, here’s what she had to say:

We absolutely love your renditions of our Tropic of Babylon collection. Tell us a bit about yourself? Where are you from? What is your background?

Originally from Melbourne, my background is in fashion design and production, both mainstream and made-to-measure. I moved to Sydney 8 & 1/2 years ago with my husbands job relocation, which allowed me to start a new venture and open up a vintage clothing business in Surry Hills called Coco Repose. I remained creative by sourcing vintage and antique clothing and accessories to sell in my boutique. This also drove my inspiration for my own limited edition range of clothing using vintage fabrics and trims.

Fashion, design and history of bygone eras are a love of mine, but I wanted to create more and have always known that I wanted to eventually step into the world of fine art and illustration. I have always tried to dabble and keep up with life drawing and art, but a year and half ago I had a bit of a ‘light bulb go off in my head’ moment and decided I could follow my dream NOW and not wait. So I closed my business to study art at the Julian Ashton art school in Sydney.

As of January 1st 2014, I put the self imposed challenge out there to start a blog and produce a ‘sketch a day’. This was to create a profile online for myself and to be able to collaborate with other business’. It also gives me freedom to create quick images each day with anything that takes my fancy on that given day. It is challenging, but the feedback is positive and exciting. And after this year I hope to develop these quick sketches into larger artworks after finding out what works and inspires me the most.

When did you first realise you had this creative talent? What made you persue this?

I have always had a love of drawing from a very early age. Even in primary school my projects always had to be the largest, most illustrated, collaged, tea stained – creative! I used to spend hours on pretty borders and many more simply sketching and colouring in. I can still remember when I was 8 years old, my grandparents gave me a 72 set of Derwent pencils which went a long way to fuelling my creative dreams. Working in the fashion industry gave me a creative stepping stone to be creative in a career that allowed me to design and travel, but also give me important business skills.

Tell us about some of your inspirations? What really drives you?

I am naturally a very driven person, there are never enough hours in the day! I have always been inspired by art and the creative process, and particularly fashion and the history of different eras. Travel gives me a lot of inspiration and I have been fortunate to travel through work which has opened my eyes and inspired me. In particular, Paris is my favourite destination and I will be headed there in July purely for an inspiration and art related trip!

I am a bit of a bowerbird, I collect everything! I pour of fashion magazines, I love visiting art galleries, but even everyday items and nature inspire me, I am always collection feathers on walks and looking at things around me for textures and design. I feel like I can find inspiration everywhere, If only there were more hours to create! – Oh and I am a little obsessed with Pinterest!

Do you have a favourite artist? If so who and why?

Hmm… my all time favourite artist/design is Alexander McQueen and currently Sarah Burton, I simply adore her creativity and style and courage in design! Purely from an art perspective, I am drawn to Degas and Rodin for their subject matter, line and sculpture. I can’t wait to get back to Paris to visit Rodin’s garden again, and to sit with my sketchbook and just draw!

You are clearly talented and have received a positive response in social media, how has the impacted how your work is received?

Social media is now such a powerful tool. Having worked in my own business I can recognise just how much this can impact on an individuals profile. There are so many talented artists out there and social media is a fantastic way to build an awareness of an individuals work. For me, it is a process of putting myself out there, and receiving feedback (good or bad) to fuel me on my journey and validate a change in career direction. Creative careers can be quite solitary at times, and it is amazing how instant positive feedback from instagram or Facebook can keep pushing me and encourage me to create. It is also a great way to be able to connect with other business’ and to show them an instant profile of your work.

Where to from here? What big plans do you have in the mix?

From here I plan to keep studying and refining my art skills. I would love to collaborate with other creative business’ on illustrated product and fashion. My long term plan is to create pieces of art using vintage and antique pieces that I have collected over many years as my inspiration. I have a story for each piece, which I hope to be able to convey through my art. I am open to where the road leads for me which is daunting but super exciting! Being a Saggitarius, I am always up for the adventure that lies ahead, it is the unknown that excites me. I do know that if I could draw, paint and illustrate everyday of my life, I would be one happy fulfilled girl!

I am glad to have had the experiences I have had in fashion and business, I feel like it has given me a great set of skills to work from, and a clear view on what inspires me. Now having made the decision to pursue my love of drawing and painting, I know that I am on the right track of pursuing my absolute passion!

What made you choose We Are Handsome as a part of your inspiration and what is your favourite sketch of the renditions?

Having a fashion background, I love to be inspired by creative fashion and was drawn to ‘We Are Handsome’ because of the unique imagery and themes favoured. I think WAH designs are bold and fun, and typify a creative process that is not always evident in the fashion industry. They are unique, and give your customer a statement about their own choice of style.

My favourite rendition sketch is ‘The Voyeur’ leggings – I love the colour and design, and I am particularly drawn to colourful feathers for painting and drawing!

If you had to choose one print/design to wear from our latest collection what would it be and why?

Ooh tough! Do I have to pick one??? I would choose ‘The Bahamas’ scoop one piece. Firstly I am always drawn to anything pink and flamingoes, and I could absolutely see myself wearing this by the pool to my Bali holiday in a couple of weeks time. I could then also wear it as a body suit with a skirt over the top out for afternoon drinks – win win! X

How To: Add a little Pop to your Summer

It seems as though this Frozen Yogurt aka FROYO craze just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Look I am not complaining, it has certainly made a feature in my summer diet over the last two summers. Who am I kidding? I FROYO all year round. So much so, that the term FROYO itself has made the rather odd but occasional transition from a noun into a verb. “Oh hey I am just going to go FROYO, want to come?” “Do you FROYO?” “Of course I FROYO!” Well now you can FROYO yourself at home with my delicious popsicle recipe. So prepare yourselves for a damn delicious summer treat with my HANDSOME POPS OF FROYO.

What you will need:

1-2 cups of organic plain or vanilla yogurt
Half cup of mixed summer fruit eg Berries, Peach, banana, watermelon, Mango
1 tablespoon of Honey
½ tablespoon of lemon juice (optional)
6-8 small paper cups
Foil
Wooden popsicle sticks
Blender

What you will need to do:

1. Add selected fruits, honey and lemon juice, to the yogurt in a blender. Blend until desired consistency.
2. Put the paper cups onto a plate or a flat tray. Cut strips of foil big enough to cover each cup individually.
3. Pour mixture into the cups at about ¾ full. Add left over pieces of fruit if desired.
4. Once the cups are filled cover each cup with foil and make a small slit in the centre of the foil where the wooden popsicle stick will go. This will help to hold the popsicle stick in place while the yogurt freezes.
5. Add the popsicle sticks and place the FROYO pops into the freezer. Once your FROYO Pops are done, just peel back the foil and paper and enjoy! Simple, easy, fun and delicious.

So there you have it. FROYO has made its way into the hearts of people all around the world and now you can have it whenever and however you want.

How to: Get Perfect Beach Curls

I’ve always loved the look of my hair after a long day at the beach. The invigorating salt, creates such a natural wave and curl that I have always wished to create on my own. Recently a friend gave me the perfect recipe for creating the very best beach curls. The best part? It is full of organic goodness for my hair and NO horrible heat tools are needed.

SO here it is. Tried and tested by me: THE PERFECT BEACH CURL CONCOCTION

What you will need:

1 Spray Bottle

3-4 tablespoons of Sea salt (this will achieve the crisp beachy look)

2-3 pumps of organic water based hair gel

1/2 teaspoon of organic Coconut based conditioning and styling creme (avoid too much as it will weigh down your hair)

2 drops of an essential oil of your choosing

What you need to do:

1. After washing your hair, towel dry and lightly blow wave until your hair is semi dry.

2. Add salt, conditioning creme, organic hair gel and droplets of oil into the spray bottle and fill with water. Shake the bottle well to mix.

3. Spray your hair until it is very damp. Using your fingers, scrunch your hair well or twist into curls and let your hair dry. For a more full on effect, braid or fish plait your hair until it dries.

4. When your hair is dry, use your fingers to maintain the curls. Add hairspray to hold if needed.

5. Rock your perfect beach curls!

WAH: Summer Series

Here at WAH HQ we love a Handsome Project. Seeming as we are all about summer and for us Southern Hemisphere inhabitants, summer has just hit home *pause for cheer* we thought it was only fitting to bring to you all the We Are Handsome: Summer Series.

So if you are a traveller entering the harsh sun south of the equator, a person who has a natural affinity with winter, a person who is pasty white, a person who loves a tan, someone who adores summer like us or in fact, if you are any human (non humans also welcome) these posts are definitely for you. We want to spread the summer love to everyone.

So without a doubt we give to you the very first in this series;

7 WAYS TO SURVIVE A HOT SUMMER DAY:

1. DRESS SUITABLY

Many people believe that the more clothes you wear the cooler you will be. I am here to tell you that this is a complete fallacy! I have walked around India, Pakistan and various parts of Asia covered up and I can tell you it is not ideal. But in saying that, let’s not be hasty and start walking around the shops in a bikini or along the side of the road topless. Unless you are Ryan Gosling, then by all means walk around topless, go right ahead! Choose clothing that will allow you to breathe and move around without being uncomfortable or sweating up a storm. Choose summer inspired fabrics and light colours to avoid heat attraction. It truly is as simple as that. If you cannot find something appropriate obviously we will be more than happy to help you update your wardrobe with one of our Handsome cover ups.

2. HYDRATE

Look we all know water is the best possible thing for you and you should drink plenty of it, but if a cocktail is on offer, you probably won’t say no. As a non alcoholic option you should jazz up some normal H20 with frozen berries or jump on the coconut water train. Coconut water is not only extremely delicious but it is full of potassium and good nutritious vitamins to keep you healthy and hydrated.

3. CRAFT A PAPER FAN

The menopausal women have the right idea. Make yourself a hand held fan that you can take everywhere with you. All you need is a popsicle stick and a paper plate. Simple.

4. BE SHADY

Yes we all know shade is important and avoiding excessive sun exposure is key….BUT you will most likely be out and about enjoying the sunshine. So if you happen to be on the beach, let’s not be one of those crazy people with the ugly and impossible beach tents. Invest in one of our Hideaway Beach Umbrellas. This will provide you will lots of shade and you will avoid those weird stares everyone gives you, when you are carrying a full size tent home because you couldn’t fold it back to its original form. Beach Umbrella for shade? Check!

5. DIVE INTO THE DEEP

It’s a no brainer kids. The ocean is cool, refreshing and healing.

6. RUN THROUGH A SPRINKLER

If you cannot reach the ocean or don’t have a pool to substitute, why not relive your childhood moments and run through a sprinkler.

7. Last but not least, SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE YOU LOVE because sharing the good vibes around is what summer is all about.

A Pool Party or two

Do the words pool party get you excited? Don’t you just think of cocktails, sunshine, beach balls, bikinis and dancing? Me too! Which is why I cannot wait for this summer to kick off, with the launch of the coveted Art Series Hotel; The Olsen Pool Club. This is definitely a to do on my list of summer hangs.

We were fortunate enough to attend the opening night of The Olsen Pool Club, in South Yarra Melbourne. Having a fun summer evening that featured cocktails, coconut water and of course our latest collection The Divine, what could be more perfect? WAH X The Olsen Pool Club? A match made in heaven.

Inspired by the decadent, fun and crazy pool party scene of Miami, The Olsen Hotel will be hosting its very own version every Sunday from 2-7pm. The interior is cool, modern and sleek, with the centre bar attracting all the attention. The roof top has fantastic views of the city and if you get bored (highly unlikely) you can play a game of life size chess! So very cool. Expect chilled tunes, good vibes, amazing summer cocktails and of course great company. If you don’t find me at my local beach soaking up the sunshine, chances are you will find me here. So make sure you attend because it will surely be an amazing summer.

It has been said that ‘a summer night is like a perfection of thought’. Considering the euphoric state that summer seems to put me in every year, I’d say that is just about right.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY GARMENT?

Although our garments may make you feel invincible, the swimsuit itself is rather delicate.

Make sure you follow these easy steps to make sure your piece of We Are Handsome stays with you forever!

Use a mild detergent while hand washing it separately in cold water.
Pretty please don’t tumble dry, wring, soak or bleach your garment (that’s just cruel), it’s best to let it dry in the shade.
Try not to leave it rolled up and wet, make sure you rinse it really well after each use, especially if you’re spending a lot of time frolicking in an infinity pool – or a non-infinity pool for that matter!
Please don’t iron or dry-clean it.
Also, try to stay away from rough surfaces as it could cause pilling, and we all know that is not a good look.
