Melbourne Spring Fashion Week

Last night saw the first designer runway take place at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. There is something about Spring Fashion Week that always makes me smile. The warmer air, the brighter sky, florals in bloom and the fashion community at its finest. Supporting local design is something we do extremely well here in Australia and in particular Melbourne doesn’t just do style, it owns style. With last nights runway focusing on exquisite couture collections and the finest of mens style, spring fashion is certainly off to an incredible start.

With the backdrop of a live orchestra and art filled light-show, kicking off the runway were the dreamlike designs of Jason Grech, who teamed up with creative artisan and milliner Richard Nylon to produce contemporary designs. Structure, metallic fluidity, intricacies and detailed embellishments formed a bold collection by Grech. Nylons minimalist yet abstract headpieces set an innovative tone for spring racing this season.

Dom Bagnato is always a stand out filling what seems to be a gap in Australian mens fashion. Tailored, three piece, innovative suits felt incredibly sartorialist, as if we were transported to Pitti Uomo or Milan. European inspired tailoring and simple details combined the classic with the contemporary perfectly. Take note gentleman this is how you should be dressing.

Exquisite, ethereal, phantasmagorical, all perfect ways to describe Gwendolynnes collection this year. Crystal embellishments paired with sheer silks and flowing trains felt luxurious, delicate and opulent. There wasn’t a moment or design within this collection that wasn’t flawless.

With many incredible collections to grace MSFW, Michael Losordo was certainly a standout and favourite of mine. Pastels, metallics and light tailoring created what can only be described as minimalist chic heaven. Oversized boyfriend pinstripe shirts were also a feature, giving me permission to raid my boyfriends wardrobe. Thank you Mr Losordo you talented human you!

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week Designer runway 1 has certainly set the standard for what will be an exciting week of local design. If you are heading to the festival, make sure you #msfw and tag @msfw while you are there and if you spot me, come and say hello.

FUN IN THE SUN

The weather is starting to warm up here in Australia and whilst we know that somewhere in the world it is summer, we are starting to adventure outdoors and get back into our summer fitness regime. We always love to find a way to combine summer and fitness. For a while now we have had a slight obsession with Stand Up Paddle Boarding!

Now I get those who are hesitant to jump on this band wagon…why wouldn’t you just surf instead huh? We do love to surf don’t get us wrong, but Stand Up Paddle Boarding or SUP as it commonly called, lets you take in all the summer sights along the way. It is the perfect combination of core strength, endurance cardio and summer fun. All the benefits of regular exercise without actually feeling like exercise.

An SUP workout can vary from level entry on a very calm flat water bay, to riding the big waves out with the surfers or a mixture of both. All of which work your core and challenge both your cardio and endurance strength. If you are really keen there is a new combo of Yoga and SUP. Yep. Yoga on a paddle board. Taking balance to a whole new level.

For me, I enjoy a good paddle board session on a calm day. There is nothing like paddling out, crystal clear aqua water beneath me, sun shining down and all the while my abs and core are getting a workout. Obviously with all the summer vibes surrounding me, I am always too distracted to realise that I am actually working out. Plus if I get tired, I can simply stop, relax, lay down on the board and catch a tan. MY KIND OF EXERCISE!

So change up your exercise routine this summer and go and grab yourself an SUP. If you don’t want to buy one, most surf shops rent them out for fun. Get on this bandwagon!

Healthy Starts

Now I am well aware that every year about this time (post winter), I catch a second wind and decide that this will be my time to get healthy. I guess winter really does a number me. I get sick of being sick and tired of being tired and vow to change my ways. So I have reintroduced one old faithful super food back into my diet. Having an Acai Bowl a day will surely keep the doctor away. Monday Mantras.

Why an Acai Bowl?

An Acai berry is called a super food for a reason. Full of antioxidants, amino acids, essential fatty acids and packed full of Vitamin E, Acai helps to build your immunity, increase your energy and helps to fight any foreign chemicals that may attack your body. If you are like me and have had a good dose of antibiotics this winter, then Acai Berry will help your body to recover and renew.

An Acai bowl is a delicious mix of Acai berries, banana, protein, strawberries and coconut water. What I love about this base, is how filling and nourishing it is. You are getting the benefits of the Acai, plus all of the vitamins and sweet taste of the other ingredients.
Then you get to play with your toppings! The fun part! Add berries, chia, granola, yogurt, kiwi, anything you like! Healthy, fun and delicious. What more could you want in a breakfast or snack?! You will feel sustained for most of the day until your next big meal, which will help you to avoid sugar based or starchy carbs.

Recipe:

Base – Blend ingredients together
4 packs frozen Açaí berry puree – you can grab this at your local health food shop
2 cups of organic coconut water
2 bananas
1 cup organic/natural frozen strawberries/berries (avoid the supermarket variety)
2 tbsp protein powder

Topping- amount to your liking
Granola
Kiwi
Berries
Chia

Recently we stumbled across the extremely talented Heather Lafleur who is the brains behind Blumenbabe Illustration. As a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Heather has worked as an award-winning corporate designer for a range of international branding agencies in NYC, Toronto, and Zürich before opening her own studio, Lafleur Design, in Munich. She is obviously one talented lady! Describing herself as an “avid doodler and journal keeper” Lafleur combines her love of drawing & creative writing with what’s trending in the world of fashion and design.

Loving flamingos and fashion just as much as we do, Heather created this rendition of The Bahamas print from our collection Tropic Of Babylon. We thought it was so cool we just had to share it with you! We always appreciate a handsome interpretation and discovering talented, creative individuals like Heather is certainly a bonus.

Island life: Bali Days

Now you all know that I am a regular traveller to Bali. People often wonder why I travel up to three to four times a year to the island. I guess for me, Bali is like my second home.

After the first trip there, we got over the hype of “tourist Bali” and opted for something a little bit more low key and quiet. The village life. It is simple, wonderful and truly spiritual. Feeling at home, eventually led to my family buying land in a village called Marga (about 45 minutes inland) and as I write this our beautiful Balinese villa is being built. I can only imagine how often I will be in Bali, or whether in fact it will become my new home in the next 6 months. But I know one thing is for certain Bali is in my heart and always will be. That is why I return.

So on my recent trip back to the Island I spent a few days jungle wandering at Pondok Puspa, a beautiful traditional Balinese villa that my family has built in the village. I rode a push bike (lets just say my lack of fitness showed its true colours) around the village and was more than well received, I was welcomed with open arms.

The best thing about being up in the village is that there is no need for eccentricities, no need for opulence, in fact no want for anything but a good meal and good company. And that is what I got. Traditional Indonesian food and quality time spent with my family. Surrounded by palm trees, jungle and rice fields, being up in Marga, Tabanan, truly is the real Bali. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

Now whilst village life is serene and certainly healing both mentally and physically, the ocean is just as cleansing for the soul. I have visited many of the beaches in Bali but my favourite is Pantai Geger in Nusa Dua. Fortunately for me I was able to spend an entire day at Gegers new hotel, The Mulia of course in my brand new WAH swimmers from our Odyssey Rising collection. Treated to a decadent and delicious brunch at one of their many restaurants Soleil and then spending all afternoon pool hopping, was simply amazing.

Now I have seen the Mulia go from a pile of rocks on the beach to the worlds “best new hotel” as crowned by Conde Nast in 2013, and I have to say you cannot realise the magnitude and innovation of this place until you actually view it from within. Pools for miles; private pools, big pools, decorative pools, just pools forever and ever. Between exploring the secret hidden spots around the hotel and our brunch at Soleil, the experience was memorable. With free flowing sparkling wine, a selection of ridiculous seafood, tapas, antipasti and deserts, not to mention the gorgeous chefs specials we got to experience. From the beautiful and delicate ravioli to the sweet crab creme brûlée, every aspect of the meal was THE “Foodie” experience. Combine this with sunshine, salt water and fresh coconuts and you really have the perfect day.

For the last couple of days, I decided a villa in Seminyak was the best way to end my holiday. All I wanted to do was relax by a pool, listen to music and enjoy my own space. Hopefully when I return I will see some significant progress on our own villa. Who knows I might just become a regular expat.

But for now, Melbourne is home. Until next time Bali.

Fight for the Reef

The Great Barrier Reef; A natural, exquisite wonder of the world. A place that is so very close to our hearts, as individuals and as a nation. A place, that is in fact in danger of being destroyed for capitalist gain.

A world heritage site, The Great Barrier Reef has been under threat from human error for a very long time. Climate change has no doubt had its impact on the reef. With rising temperatures, inconsistent weather and chemical imbalances threatening the very nature of eco systems that have existed for millions of years, the reef itself cannot take another blow.

Yet here we are. At a dark point in our history, where such a stunning gift from nature is under threat again. The Australian Governments big corporation alliance and money eyed blinkers may just be the death of the reef. In an effort to “promote economic growth” the Queensland Government has set in motion plans to approve mega port developments, severe dredging and dumping of millions of tonnes of seabed and rock. Not to mention the creation of a shipping superhighway.

One would think that prefaced with the word SUPER, the benefits would outweigh the costs. Wrong. Here’s what this so called SUPERhighway really means…

The Australian Government will only be adding to what already is a volatile situation. In the last 6 months, severe dredging of the reef traced back to Gladstone Harbour, has caused the release of toxic chemicals into the ocean. The result? Precious marine life have become diseased, washing up on the surrounding shores. In fact 6 dolphins, 10 dugongs and 231 turtles have washed up dead near Gladstone on the Great Barrier Reef. With only the first stage underway of this SUPER highway and multi-port development, the impact can only be dire.

The only way to stop to the inevitable, is to stand up and fight. Let your voice be heard. As individuals and a label that not only respects the Great Barrier Reef but cherishes its beauty, we will stand up and fight for the reef. Here’s how you can too:

It’s no secret that we generally don’t function at WAH HQ without our coffee fix in the mornings. As the saying goes we need coffee to coffee our coffee coffee coffee…um yep that sounds about right. It seems as though at this years Mercedes Benz Fashion Week our guests agreed with us. With all the fashionistas, designers, journalists, bloggers and photographers running around from show to show, a good coffee and mineral water from our friends over at Vittoria was a saving grace for many at our runway. The very talented illustrator ad creative Erika Rivera has created an amazing rendition of her favourite pieces from our Handsome collections. We caught up with Erika and she told us all about her love for drawing, illustration, design and everything beautiful.

We adore your renditions of our swimwear. Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from and what is your background?

Well, I’m originally form San Diego, California where I went to school at FIDM for Product Development. I recently moved to Syracuse, New York to be with my soon to be husband. Moving from the West Coast to the East Coast was a huge change for me especially climate wise. This was going to be my first winter ever I I’m glad to say I’m still alive. Since moving I have really focused on the basic skills for my drawings. During winter I stayed inside most days due to the winter but I found it as a blessing in disguise. I was able to sit down and draw until my little heart was content. I’ve always loved fashion and my friends would always want to pick an outfit for them.

Since I wanted to do something with my fashion background I knew drawing illustrations would be perfect. I get to look at outfits pieced together by bloggers, runway shows, and many brands on the market. I decided illustrating was my way to express myself and put a fun spin on clothes. I get excited whenever a new project lines up because I’m able to share my passion with others. Plus, I love getting the client’s reaction once they receive the final product.

Many artists draw on the elements that surround them for creativity, what are some of your inspirations?

For me to be inspired it starts with a simple walk outside. Just taking in a breath of fresh air gets my wheels going. I try to take in as much nature that surrounds me and then I find that my mind starts creating. Another way I get inspired is to be by the beach. When I was in San Diego the beach was my safe haven from anything that was happening in life. I loved listening to the waves, feeling the sand, and that powerful sun. Even imagining that I’m there will do. Then I start sketching and figuring out the movement of a garment when looking at photos. Earth is my muse.

When did you first discover you had this creative talent? What made you pursue this?

The very first time I found myself intrigued with art was 3^rd grade. We had to draw a picture of a how to get out of a house fire safely. My picture won throughout all the elementary schools and got recognition from the local fire department. This was a huge deal to me. Once I found my creative side I never wanted it to disperse. My dad is very creative and an amazing artist. He would draw my brother and I like it was second nature. He tells me I get my artistic side from him. I definitely agree. As I got older I started getting into clothes and fell in love with the concept of creating yourself from the outside. I was always checking out what the classic pieces were to have in a wardrobe and what to wear during the seasons. Whenever I would go shopping my dad would always be there. He has a lot to do with my artistry. Overall my family was behind my every decision.

How has social and digital media helped you to share your talent? How important has this been?

Oh my gosh!! Big time!! Social media is the main reason I’m able to share my fashion illustrations with the world. Instagram is my biggest help to show what I do. Being able to reach other all over is completely incredible. I’m very blessed to live during a time where technology is mainstream. I love having access to reach out to people in the palm of my hand. Literally. There is a massive support team through social media and reading the positive feedback touches my heart. I also stumble upon other artists and its life a family reunion where you have no idea who anyone is but can connect so easily with them. When I met new artists from any industry I embrace them. And stay connected is so important! I mean we have no excuse to send a thank you or a hello to someone anymore. I’m very thankful to have social media in my life. Sometimes I do need to put the phone down though and be present.

Do you have a favourite artist? If so who and why?

I would have to say Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCarthy. Karl Lagerfeld has revamped Chanel and added a modern spin on every collection. I never get bored with anything he gets his hands on. He will mix the timeless classics with an unexpected twist. And come on, everyone loves a great plot twist to a story. Now Stella McCarthy perfectly captures what a women is all about…Confidence. The simplicity and femininity of her garments are flawless. You’re able to use a coat from a past collection and pair it with a blouse from her 2014 summer collection. She never misses a beat. I would love to wear everything she’s created.

Where to from here? What big plans do you have in the mix?

Well, I’m going to continue practicing everyday. I want to make sure I’m persistent in enhancing the basics of my skills. I want to work with other brands, designers, and fashion bloggers to create illustrations that will be very special. When I make my place in this fashion world I would be thrilled to work with magazines and have my illustrations hanging up in a museum one day. Could you imagine!? I want to show girls that dreams can come true with hard work and never saying No! Collaborating is what I love doing. I want to create, inspire, and imagine everyday.

From all of your renditions of We Are Handsome (all are amazing) which one was your favourite to sketch and why?

My favorite rendition to sketch was the Landing Scoop one piece that shows the backside. I usually illustrate forward and three-quarter poses but this backside is my favorite. It’s playful, sexy, and fun. The colors of that swimsuit were my favorite. The way the plane is about to land with the palm tress around it reminds me of home. You can pair this one piece with a fabulous floppy hat and look stunning by the poolside, beach, or relaxing in a hammock.

If you had to choose one print/design to wear from our latest collection what would it be and why?

Hands down the Aloha string bikini. Love the colors, print, and everything about it! I’m a bikini kind of gal and this screams Erika! It would be perfect for my honeymoon coming up in a month. Plus, I think my fiancée would love to see my strutting my stuff in this little number. Incredible!

SNACK ATTACK

You’ve had our Handsome Pops of Froyo and yes they are delicious, but we are currently obsessing over chocolate coated ice-creams. Not just any ice-creams. Connoisseur dessert ice-creams. HEAVEN!

Whether we are in the Maldives shooting our latest campaign, working hard at WAH HQ or running around backstage at our Fashion Week Show, Connoisseur ice-creams are our favourite snack to keep away the hunger and give us some energy to keep going.

The best part is, it never gets boring. So many flavours…! Personally on any given day I will choose Vanilla (I like the classics) and if I want to spice it up I will head on over to Salted Caramel (TO DIE FOR) but if I wanted something new, there would be no issue. The only problem is stopping myself from splurging and eating all the flavours in one day. With WAH HQ’s freezer full of ice-cream, it tends to be hard not too.

We thought that we should share our obsession this year with our guests at Fashion Week. All of our guests were given the opportunity to try their favourite flavour whilst watching our latest collection hit the runway. A delicious way to enjoy the show. We certainly think so.

As children our favourite and most exciting snack was always ice-cream. The sound of the ice-cream truck in our streets sent us crazy, the excitement we got when Mum or Dad yelled ‘Dessert time’ was unparalleled…..I guess now that we have grown up…nothing has changed.

Now you know we love listening to our favourite tunes, in fact at WAH HQ music is an essential in our day. It motivates and inspires us and if anything it keeps us in a good mood. Nietzsche once said that ‘without music, life would be a mistake’ and we tend to to agree.

Every year at Australian Fashion Week we always choose a soundtrack that represents who we are at We Are Handsome. A collection of songs that fill our guests with good vibes and a beat in their step. HOW DO I CARE FOR MY GARMENT?

Although our garments may make you feel invincible, the swimsuit itself is rather delicate.

Make sure you follow these easy steps to make sure your piece of We Are Handsome stays with you forever!

Use a mild detergent while hand washing it separately in cold water.
Pretty please don’t tumble dry, wring, soak or bleach your garment (that’s just cruel), it’s best to let it dry in the shade.
Try not to leave it rolled up and wet, make sure you rinse it really well after each use, especially if you’re spending a lot of time frolicking in an infinity pool – or a non-infinity pool for that matter!
Please don’t iron or dry-clean it.
Also, try to stay away from rough surfaces as it could cause pilling, and we all know that is not a good look.
