Fashion Week Embellished

Another night of #FASHUN at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, with embellishments, all of the pretty shiny things and some tall, dark and handsome male models in the mix. They must have know I was attending. Live singers, oriental inspired musicians and spectacular lighting told the story of each designers inspiration and muse behind their collection. Designers Arthur Galan, Calibre, Akira and Christine Accessories were by far stand outs.

Captivating melodies of a Japanese Shamisen, hummed in the background of what was an oriental trance. Akira stole the show with her use of eastern draping, intricate beading, embroidery and bold colour palette. Each design was uniquely detailed and perfectly styled to produce well executed aesthetic.

With Ashley Hart showing off Arthur Galan’s designs earlier this week, we were able to get a sneak preview of the geometric prints and intricate details of Galans SS14 collection. A striking aesthetic, the collection features strong silhouettes, embroidery and feminine structures. Galan always produces a stunning collection, earning him the title of one of the most well respected designers in the industry.

Calibre produced yet again another stand out collection for the men this year. The classic European tailored cut is always well received, balancing classic with contemporary perfectly. The use of graphic prints, pastel blue hues and the classic chino, ultimately played to a younger demographic. Though my focus sometimes shifted to the beautiful humans that were wearing the clothes, my attention was definitely on the designs. Most of the time.

Christine Accessories was no doubt a stand out, using textured fabrics, bold prints and vibrant colours in both a resort and couture capacity. Detailed beading with chunky accessories payed homage to the bohemian nomadic wanderer. Playful, fun, sexy and elegant are all qualities articulated within this collection.

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week

Last night saw the first designer runway take place at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. There is something about Spring Fashion Week that always makes me smile. The warmer air, the brighter sky, florals in bloom and the fashion community at its finest. Supporting local design is something we do extremely well here in Australia and in particular Melbourne doesn’t just do style, it owns style. With last nights runway focusing on exquisite couture collections and the finest of mens style, spring fashion is certainly off to an incredible start.

With the backdrop of a live orchestra and art filled light-show, kicking off the runway were the dreamlike designs of Jason Grech, who teamed up with creative artisan and milliner Richard Nylon to produce contemporary designs. Structure, metallic fluidity, intricacies and detailed embellishments formed a bold collection by Grech. Nylons minimalist yet abstract headpieces set an innovative tone for spring racing this season.

Dom Bagnato is always a stand out filling what seems to be a gap in Australian mens fashion. Tailored, three piece, innovative suits felt incredibly sartorialist, as if we were transported to Pitti Uomo or Milan. European inspired tailoring and simple details combined the classic with the contemporary perfectly. Take note gentleman this is how you should be dressing.

Exquisite, ethereal, phantasmagorical, all perfect ways to describe Gwendolynnes collection this year. Crystal embellishments paired with sheer silks and flowing trains felt luxurious, delicate and opulent. There wasn’t a moment or design within this collection that wasn’t flawless.

With many incredible collections to grace MSFW, Michael Losordo was certainly a standout and favourite of mine. Pastels, metallics and light tailoring created what can only be described as minimalist chic heaven. Oversized boyfriend pinstripe shirts were also a feature, giving me permission to raid my boyfriends wardrobe. Thank you Mr Losordo you talented human you!

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week Designer runway 1 has certainly set the standard for what will be an exciting week of local design. If you are heading to the festival, make sure you #msfw and tag @msfw while you are there and if you spot me, come and say hello.

A Spring Fling Darling

Spring has sprung which means the Spring racing season has begun in Australia. There is nothing like going to the races. The individuality and elegant style of race wear is classic and timeless. It is one of the few occasions where the more daring and outrageous your hat or fascinator, the better. As we saw in Spring Fashion week Richard Nylons millinery designs had people in awe and have certainly inspired some authentic and fabulous headwear this season. Get creative, make your own hat or fascinator, you don’t have to spend a lot to look good.

MSFW Opening Night

The opening night of Melbourne Spring Fashion Festival certainly delivered. The first designer runway featured high end and couture designs from the likes of Jason Grech, Aurelio Costarella, Dom Bagnato, Gwendolynne, Craig Braybrook, Jayson Brunsdon, Nicolangela and the ever so brilliant and talented milliner Richard Nylon.
