There’s a phenomenon that’s been conspicuously (and happily) absent from my life ever since I moved to Australia 10 years ago: the post-holiday grumpies. After Christmas, Australians cleverly move right into festival season, keeping up the lovely momentum of holiday and summer happiness. It leaves us very little to look forward to during our lukewarm winters, but that’s a different story.

But Northern-Hemisphere-dwellers, I still feel your pain. The holidays are over and all you’re left with is the unique misery one feels when staring at piles of dirty snow, thinking about an annoying resolution to eat more kale and knowing there’s no hope of seeing a blade of grass until April.

Cheer up! I have a brilliant solution, and it has everything to do with shopping. Everyone knows the best kind of emotional band-aid involves spending money, so after you buy your kale, get thee to a mall.

How To: Get your Green Smoothie on

Here at WAH HQ we love a good summer juice! After trying so many green juices from completely vegetable to all fruits, we have found that a mixture of fruit and veg makes the perfect green smoothie. Not too bitter, not too sweet, 100% pure goodness for your body.

Obviously we had to share this with you! So here it is…

What you will need:

1 cup Coconut water (fresh or organic bottled)

½ cup Coconut flesh

1-2 handfuls Spinach

1 handful of Kale

½ chopped Cucumber (without skin)

2-3 Passionfruit pulp

1 Kiwi fruit diced (no skin)

1 Banana chopped (optional)

Chia seeds (your choice how much)

Organic Protein Powder (see product instructions)

Frozen Berries to serve

What you will need to do:

1. Using a high speed blender, puree the spinach, cucumber and coconut flesh. Add water initially to allow ingredients to mix properly.

2. Add coconut water and Kale and blend on high speed.

3. Add passionfruit, kiwi and banana to the mix. Coconut water or normal water can be added when needed to create a drinkable consistency. 

4. Finally add protein and Chia and mix on a high speed until smoothie perfect. Taste to test. Add extra fruit or veg depending on how sweet you like your green juices. If you have a sweet tooth add a touch of organic honey.

5. Pour into a jar glass and add Frozen berries on top to serve.

Experiment with different fruits and add ons for variety.  Green Juices are a healthy and quick way to get your serving of fruit and veg daily but they should not replace all of your meals. Remember by being good to your body, your body will be good to you.

How to: Get that healthy summer glow

We all want to look radiant and glowing in the summer. Sunkissed and healthy skin just makes you feel better. By being kind to yourself and putting into your body all the goodness it needs, you will surely get that summer glow in no time.

Here are our top 5 ways to get that perfect ntaural summer glow you all want!

1. H20– Water is key here guys. On average an adult should be drinking between 2-2.5 litres of water a day. Remember your skin is the biggest organ you have so keep it hydrated.

2. EAT HEALTHY– We all know that foods with high fat, sugar and salt content are bad for you. Overeating foods with such content can cause many health problems. Our advice? Aim to avoid crazy diets and eat a healthy well balanced diet of vegetables, fruits, protein and good carbs. If you do this, having that piece of cake every now and again is not going to harm you.

3. TREAT YOUR SKIN DAILY– It is very important to have a daily skin revitalising routine. The summer sun can be harsh which means your skin needs just as much care as your body. Cleanse, tone, moisturise, sunscreen and exfoliate. It is simple really. Choose products with natural ingredients that won’t be harsh on your skin. We love, the his & hers range from Milk & co. 5. BE KIND TO YOURSELF: Stress can cause many health problems and leave you looking tired and run down. So be kind to yourself. How to: Get Perfect Beach Curls

I’ve always loved the look of my hair after a long day at the beach. The invigorating salt, creates such a natural wave and curl that I have always wished to create on my own. Recently a friend gave me the perfect recipe for creating the very best beach curls. The best part? It is full of organic goodness for my hair and NO horrible heat tools are needed.

SO here it is. Tried and tested by me: THE PERFECT BEACH CURL CONCOCTION

What you will need:

1 Spray Bottle

3-4 tablespoons of Sea salt (this will achieve the crisp beachy look)

2-3 pumps of organic water based hair gel

1/2 teaspoon of organic Coconut based conditioning and styling creme (avoid too much as it will weigh down your hair)

2 drops of an essential oil of your choosing

What you need to do:

1. After washing your hair, towel dry and lightly blow wave until your hair is semi dry.

2. Add salt, conditioning creme, organic hair gel and droplets of oil into the spray bottle and fill with water. Shake the bottle well to mix.

3. Spray your hair until it is very damp. Using your fingers, scrunch your hair well or twist into curls and let your hair dry. For a more full on effect, braid or fish plait your hair until it dries.

4. When your hair is dry, use your fingers to maintain the curls. Add hairspray to hold if needed.

5. Rock your perfect beach curls!

A Handsome Project – Amanda Bisk & Chris Lew

What was the concept of the shoot?

Chris and I have worked together this year creating images focused on our pure love for the outdoors. When we came together to create some images for We Are Handsome, we were very conscious in our intentions to focus on using bold, saturated tones, as well as capturing and preserving the underlying core essence of the We Are Handsome brand. The sweeping beaches, sheltered coves and raw headlands surrounding Sydney proved the perfect backdrop against which to juxtapose dominant, physical lines with the vibrant tones and streamlined details of the swimwear pieces.

Tell us a bit about yourselves?

AB: I have been involved in sport since the age of 3 and have always had a passion for healthy and active living. My background in gymnastics and athletics led me to find pole vault, where I represented Australia at the World University Games in Belgrade in 2009 and the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010. Chris and I actually met because of athletics!

Following the games in Delhi I had plans to prepare for the Olympic Games in London. In 2011 I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue, which forced me to retire from pole vault. This turned my life around and for a long while I felt lost.

In the last year I have really focused on living the most happy, healthy and active life possible. A year ago I found yoga (a form of exercise that could help my chronic fatigue symptoms), which has really helped me in my transition into normal life after being an elite athlete for so many years. I have also taken the time to educate myself about nutrition and food and have discovered how important this is for our health and wellbeing.

I am now a pole vault coach at the Western Australian Institute of Sport. I absolutely love it, it allows me to pass on my knowledge and see athletes master their skill and fulfill their dreams in sport. For my own well being I love keeping active and I try to do as many different sports and exercises as I can. I am involved in running the Perth Nike Run Club every week, which I combine with yoga, strength training, bike riding, surfing, gymnastics and anything else that comes my way.

I really believe variety in life is essential, and this applies to everything including food, exercise, mental stimulation and social experiences. We need a balance and I try to channel this through my pictures on my instagram and facebook accounts. The work Chris and I have done in recent months has really captured some amazing moments.

CL: I had a pretty active childhood, you would have found me on the monkey bars, the tennis court, rugby field or on the athletics track. I found a talent for running at high school and was lucky enough to compete at national level for a few years. I dabbled in rugby for a few seasons, but I returned to running after getting belted by overweight forwards a few more times than I enjoyed.

I traversed the traditional route after school and studied finance and accounting at university. I worked in the corporate world for close to a decade, but eventually left it in the rear view mirror to pursue full time commercial, advertising photography. Creating something that matters and chasing things you love ultimately proved more important to me.

The athletics community is fairly tight-knit in Australia, I met up with Amanda earlier this year to collaborate and decided to work together long-term to build a platform to help and inspire others. I love her positive attitude to everything, and it’s been an easy partnership.

What is your photography history Chris?

CL: I had my start in photography at an early age. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been surrounded by cameras. I was born in the 80’s, we were the last of the film generation, long before the internet had arrived and mobile camera technology was the norm. I carried my camera everywhere, before you could be labelled a trendy hipster. I found I always had a point-and-shoot lying at the bottom of my track bag and would snap candids at the running track, eventually progressing to the competition arena. Many of my friends were sponsored athletes, and I began shooting images off the beaten path, travelling to remote locations with the specific intention to chase and create unique and captivating images. My work began being published in print and online, and a number of shoe and apparel companies began noticing my work.

I dabbled on the internet in the late 90’s, I taught myself how to code at the age of 11. The advent of social media, mobile communication and web 2.0 have been powerful vehicles with which to transport my images and voice across the globe. The raw image will always make my heart beat faster, and I’ve always been big on producing and sharing interesting and unique content, and helping others in the industry.

 What makes you tick?

AB: Being around wonderful people. My family and friends give me energy and make me happy. If you are surrounded by positive, motivating and inspirational people it is really contagious and you have no other option but to feel amazing.

CL: I love the collaborative and the creative process. I’m a strong advocate of shooting personal work, images that you’re passionate about, with no underlying agenda, client or creative directive. Everyone owns a camera and is a photographer these days, and it’s an amazing time for the industry, but being unique will set you apart from everyone else in the industry and lets you stand out from the crowd.

Where to next?

AB: Chris and I have a great friendship and we really enjoy working together. There are definitely plans to continue our work and to just keep discovering new and exciting concepts. Each time we come together I feel like our images are better than the time before so I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

I am also currently developing a website with my partner to share my knowledge and experience of health and exercise. Chris’ images will definitely be a centerpiece and these will be combined with a blog and compilation of food, fitness, wellbeing and motivation. I want to show people that healthy and active living doesn’t need to be boring and that it can be achievable through simple changes.

HOW TO: MAKE THE PERFECT SUMMER SANGRIA

Between summer and the festive season, it is always important to have a good cocktail recipe up your sleeve. Whilst we have many recipes we want to share with you (and we will) today we give to you the Summer Sangria. Whether you are a cocktail lover or a wine drinker, a Sangria covers all bases. So here is our favourite recipe for you to share around:

Ingredients

2 Bottles of Dry Red Wine (we reccommend a Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz)

120mls Triple Sec

90mls Brandy

100mls Fresh Orange Juice

60mls Fresh Lime Juice

60mls Fresh Lemon Juice

2 tablespoons Organic Raw Sugar

Fresh Lemon Slices (from already used lemon)

Fresh Orange Slices (from already used orange)

Fresh Lime Slices (from already used lime)

1/2 Punnet of organic Strawberries washed and halved

1 cup Organic Frozen Mixed Berries

Top up with Soda Water or Lemonade (whatever strikes your fancy)

Method:

Pour all liquid ingredients into a large pitcher or punch bowl. Add Sugar and stir. Slice and chop the fruit and add to the mix.

Taste to test then chill in the fridge or add ice.

Pour and Enjoy.

Now that you have the perfect Summer Sangria recipe, all you need to do is make and enjoy it with the people you love.

WAH: Summer Series

Here at WAH HQ we love a Handsome Project. Seeming as we are all about summer and for us Southern Hemisphere inhabitants, summer has just hit home *pause for cheer* we thought it was only fitting to bring to you all the We Are Handsome: Summer Series.

So if you are a traveller entering the harsh sun south of the equator, a person who has a natural affinity with winter, a person who is pasty white, a person who loves a tan, someone who adores summer like us or in fact, if you are any human (non humans also welcome) these posts are definitely for you.  We want to spread the summer love to everyone.

So without a doubt we give to you the very first in this series;

7 WAYS TO SURVIVE A HOT SUMMER DAY:

1. DRESS SUITABLY

Many people believe that the more clothes you wear the cooler you will be. I am here to tell you that this is a complete fallacy! I have walked around India, Pakistan and various parts of Asia covered up and I can tell you it is not ideal. But in saying that, let’s not be hasty and start walking around the shops in a bikini or along the side of the road topless. Unless you are Ryan Gosling, then by all means walk around topless, go right ahead! Choose clothing that will allow you to breathe and move around without being uncomfortable or sweating up a storm. Choose summer inspired fabrics and light colours to avoid heat attraction. It truly is as simple as that. If you cannot find something appropriate obviously we will be more than happy to help you update your wardrobe with one of our Handsome cover ups.

2. HYDRATE

Look we all know water is the best possible thing for you and you should drink plenty of it, but if a cocktail is on offer, you probably won’t say no. As a non alcoholic option you should jazz up some normal H20 with frozen berries or jump on the coconut water train. Coconut water is not only extremely delicious but it is full of potassium and good nutritious vitamins to keep you healthy and hydrated.

3. CRAFT A PAPER FAN

The menopausal women have the right idea. Make yourself a hand held fan that you can take everywhere with you. All you need is a popsicle stick and a paper plate. Simple.

4. BE SHADY

Yes we all know shade is important and avoiding excessive sun exposure is key….BUT you will most likely be out and about enjoying the sunshine. So if you happen to be on the beach, let’s not be one of those crazy people with the ugly and impossible beach tents. Invest in one of our Hideaway Beach Umbrellas. This will provide you will lots of shade and you will avoid those weird stares everyone gives you, when you are carrying a full size tent home because you couldn’t fold it back to its original form. 5. DIVE INTO THE DEEP

6. RUN THROUGH A SPRINKLER

If you cannot reach the ocean or don’t have a pool to substitute, why not relive your childhood moments and run through a sprinkler.

7. Last but not least, SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE YOU LOVE because sharing the good vibes around is what summer is all about.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY GARMENT?

Although our garments may make you feel invincible, the swimsuit itself is rather delicate.

Make sure you follow these easy steps to make sure your piece of We Are Handsome stays with you forever!

  • Use a mild detergent while hand washing it separately in cold water.
  • Pretty please don’t tumble dry, wring, soak or bleach your garment (that’s just cruel), it’s best to let it dry in the shade.
  • Try not to leave it rolled up and wet, make sure you rinse it really well after each use, especially if you’re spending a lot of time frolicking in an infinity pool – or a non-infinity pool for that matter!
  • Please don’t iron or dry-clean it.
  • Also, try to stay away from rough surfaces as it could cause pilling, and we all know that is not a good look.
