The new Kings of Leon album – Mechanical Bull – is almost out and we’ve been listening to the stream on itunes almost constantly since last week when it appeared. For me, it’s a return to form for one of the new world’s great rock and roll outfits, with a mix of strong rock songs with catchy riffs, and melodic ballads that the KOL are famous for.
You can listen at the link above – or on Spotify of course. The full album is available for purchase on Sept. 24th.
In a world where fashion can often be driven by consumerism, there is a need for both film and print editorial, to reflect the individual creation of style and go beyond just surface aesthetics, telling stories of creativity and originality. It is often rare that you find this. Joshua Kissi & Travis Gumbs of Street Etiquette are believers in this concept and it is through their vision along with fellow collaborators; the Visual Supply Company and Photographer Rog Walker, their latest project SLUMFLOWER, came to life.
Friday the 13th has always got a bad rap and I am not personally a superstitious person but I do wonder why the Friday the 13th superstition stick so firmly in our minds? According to Thomas Gilovich, chair of the department of psychology at Cornell University, our brains are almost too good at making associations. “If anything bad happens to you on Friday the 13th, the two will be forever associated in your mind, and all those uneventful days in which the 13th fell on a Friday will be ignored,” Gilovich said in a statement in 13 Superstitions & Traditions Explained.
This got me thinking about other quirks and facts about this omnipotent day and I”ve got the definitive list of them right here:
1. On a Friday 13th in 1307 thousands of soldier monks of the powerful Knights Templar were massacred by French king Louis IV. Many people believe this is where our fear of the date springs from.
2. The scientific name for fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia (pronounced pair- uh – SKEV – vee – day – CAT – tree – uh – FOE – bee – uh) and Triskaidekaphobia is fear of the number 13.
3. Director of psychological thrillers Alfred Hitchcock was born on the 13th — Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, would have been his 100th birthday.
4. Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926 and Tupac Shacur was killed on Friday, September 13.
5. Several buildings and many hospitals have no room 13 and airline terminals avoid rooms and gates which are numbered 13.
6. Taylor Swift actually considers 13 to be her lucky number.
7. US President Franklin Roosevelt would not travel on the 13th day of any month and would not host 13 guests at a meal. Napoleon and US President Herbert Hoover were also said to suffer from triskaidekaphobia.
8. Mark Twain once was the 13th guest at a dinner party. A friend warned him not to go. “It was bad luck,” Twain later told the friend. “They only had food for 12.” In Paris, one can hire a quatorzieme, or a professional 14th guest, to remove the so-called bad luck brought by the number 13 as well as Friday the 13th.
9. There were three Friday the 13ths in 2012. Jan. 13, Apr. 13, and July 13. All exactly 13 weeks apart.
10. The next year in which we’ll have three Friday the 13ths is 2015. They’ll fall in February, March and November.
11. More than 60 million people worldwide claim to be affected by a fear of Friday 13th. Some of them won’t go to work, drive cars or get out of bed on the day.
12. Friday the 13th may not be as unlucky as people think. A 2008 Dutch study showed that fewer car accidents, fires and crimes occur on the said day, especially since superstitious would-be victims make an effort to stay out of harm’s way. According to CNBC, the US market has been up 80 times out of the past 140 occasions when the 13th of a month landed on a Friday.
13. And lastly…the thirteenth installment of the Friday the 13th film series is set to be released on Friday September 13th, 2013. That’s today!

We love our landscapes at We Are Handsome, but how about looking at them from a different perspective?
‘Earth From Above’ is the result of photographer Yann Arthus-Betrand’s five year aerial project, in which he travelled around six continents, documenting astonishing natural landscapes from a unique perspective – above. Each aerial photograph tells it’s own story about the changing planet. This is only a selection, but make sure you check out his website.
Well it has been such a delight viewing the incredible Australian designs, coming out of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week this year. One thing is for certain, as I keep saying, the standard has really been set for future fashion weeks in Australia. The production element was just spectacular, with most runways paired with innovative and entertaining lighting designs, as well as epic tunes and live entertainment.
It was ever so fitting that We Are Handsome kick off the final runway for MSFW 2013. Showing the latest looks from our 2013 collections, the models looked very handsome and rocked the resort show. From our coverups, cupped one pieces, triangle bikinis and playful dresses, we had the runway covered. A number of prints were showcased including The Thief, The Impressor and The Vagabond. In particular “The Stallion” was a reoccuring print, showing verasility in its wear and design. A very successful Handsome show.
The final designer runway continued its theme of grandeur with a live performance from two very talented DJs being filmed and projected onto the stage as if it were a canvas.
A couple of favourites from the series, with Limedrop an absolute stand out. The labels flirty meets structured designs paired with their oh-so cool mirror shades, was certainly on trend. Limedrops use of pastels, lavenders, signature crystal and cloud prints epitomised the playful nature of Spring/Summer. The crystal print cropped jacket was definitely a favourite of mine and one I will be purchasing when the collection drops.
Going through the hundreds of photographs from our jaunt to Hamilton Island I came across this beauty and was instantly (figuratively) transported back to the better part of a week we spent island hopping, eating like kings and breathing sunshine.
If you didn’t have a chance to see all the photographs and read about the trip you can do so here.
Designer Runway 3 was truly inspiring. Continuing with the festival fever, Melbourne duo Tamil Rogeon and Ryan Ritchie from The Raah Project kicked off the show with what became the epic soundtrack to designer runway three. With a fantastic mix of mens style, accessories, couture and ready-to-wear spring fashion, the creativity coming out of the collections really demonstrated the excellence and individuality of the Australian Fashion Industry.
There’s no denying that we love our animals at We Are Handsome, so when we came across these photo-manipulations by Christopher Meyer, we couldn’t help but have a little chuckle. Happy Friday!
