There is nothing like escaping to a tropical destination for a bit of rest and relaxation. Combine this with a unique, rewarding and charitable experience and I’d say I have found my perfect holiday.
Usually, if I stay any longer than 3 weeks in a destination I like to find an experience that will give back to the local community or environment. Last year when I took a couple of months off in Bali I found myself volunteering at a local school in Denpasar teaching English. I guess it runs in the family, as my father did the same thing in Laos and Cambodia; teaching and helping to rebuild a rural school. You get the enjoyment of being in a tropical and culturally exotic location and at the same time, experience the rewarding nature of giving.
Quite often in the past few months the Maldives has captivated my mind and called to me. The islands are just stunning. Crystal blue water, white sand, coconut trees and gorgeous reef life is nature at its finest. What I love about the islands, is the simplistic lifestyle lead. Away from the everyday hustle and bustle, its people have relished in the idyllic living throughout time. Imagine laying on the sand looking out at the vast aqua sea, the sun beaming down on your skin, salt drenched hair, with a fresh coconut in your hand, spending your day’s snorkelling, diving and relaxing. How incredibly divine!
As I said, mixing relaxation with a bit of charity work, always helps to cleanse the mind body and spirit. I hope that if I ever get to visit what I consider to be one of my perfect holiday destinations, I get to meet the fantastic eco-conservation team The Marine Savers. Getting a sense of what they do and in any way possible help would certainly be amazing. The Marine Savers Team, who base themselves out of the Four Seasons Maldives, run a number of different programs which focus on marine conservation. The conservation of sea turtles however just warms my heart. The team focuses on the protection of nests and the rehabilitation of injured turtles, so very cute.
And why wouldn’t you want conserve such a beautiful species? They truly are an innocent creature. Their placid nature and whimsical, intriguing intelligence, sees them navigating the ocean from birth by simply following the stars, endlessly frolicking for years, mapping the ocean by following the earth’s magnetic field. Just incredible. Helping to protect these cute little creatures would certainly be a rewarding experience. Getting to do so in one of the most beautiful places in the world? Well…it is simply just a bonus.
So now you know my ideal type of holiday; tropical beaches, azure oceans and a bit of altruism, tell me about your perfect getaway. Are you the adventure type? Do you want to follow summer around the world like the crew at WAH?
Dream of warmth and fresh coconuts Handsome Wanderers.
