Alexander Safonov is not quite your regular software architect from Voronezh, Russia.
Fascinated by the wet world that covers most of our planet, he trained and got his diving license in 2002 and started to experiment with underwater photography.
Since then, he’s made several trips to photograph the spectacular underwater wildlife off Cocos Island, Fiji, the Galapagos and Raja Ampat.
He has become especially taken with the annual sardine run off the coast of South Africa where most of the photos here were captured over the last few years. You can see many more photographs on his Flickr and 500px pages
In love with this amazing work by David Copithorne
Some of my fave photos from this week:
Shot by Brad Mawby, Sydney.
Polish photographer Marcin Ryczek snapped this beautifully juxtaposed photograph of a man feeding swans and ducks from a snowy river bank in Krakow. The balance between black/white, water/snow, and person/animals is breathtaking – what every photographer could possibly hope to capture and in one single photograph? WOW.
You can download a desktop sized version of the photo here, and check out more of his photos in his portfolio.
As you might have seen on our Facebook and Instagram (or on the sidebar over there ——->) we’ve been on tour in Africa for a month. From Johannesburg to Cape town and all over Tanzania we had amazing experiences and met the loveliest people on earth. Lots of pictures to come over the next while so stay tuned!
