WAH Fitgirls: Juliet Burnett

Pocket rocket Juliet Burnett brought her all to the WAH stage – something she does best as a highly successful ballerina, dancing with the Australian Ballet. Juliet is one to thank for our killer opening to the WAH activewear show, which set a powerful atmosphere for what surprises were in store. Lucky enough to be able to turn her life-long passion into a profession, Juliet loves and makes the most of everyday, inspiring those around her to simply do what they love –  the We Are Handsome brand is designed with exactly this in mind.

What inspired you to start being active?

I dreamed of being a ballet dancer from a young age, as many girls do. In order to achieve that, I had to undertake years of strict and rigorous training. Ballet is an art form, but our physical demands are equivalent to those of an athlete. The difference is that we have to make it look easy; part of the art is in making our movements effortless.

What do you love most about this lifestyle?

I am making a living with my passion. I need to dance like I need to breathe. What’s not to love?!

What is a normal day like for you?

I’m up early for a morning Pilates session, then each morning we do ballet class. From here the day varies depending on whether I am in a performance season or rehearsal period. For the latter, I’ll be rehearsing intensively on a variety of upcoming ballets until 6:30pm, with a short lunch break in between. When there’s a show at night, we rehearse until 3pm, have a couple of hours break before I get in to the theatre by 5pm to warm up and prepare for the show that starts at 7:30pm and finishes anywhere between 9:30pm and 11pm, depending on the production. We work six days per week, with Sunday our only day off, and when we are performing we have two shows on a Saturday and sometimes even two shows on a Wednesday. This year The Australian Ballet will perform over 180 shows around Australia and overseas. At night I wind down by doing some writing (I have my own blog www.dancinginaturningworld.com as well as writing for dance websites and publications) and, when at home in Melbourne, hanging out with my husband, music producer Nick Thayer, and our house rabbit Sadie.

How do you balance your time?

Balance is key to longevity in this profession. It is all-consuming: even when I’m not in the studio or onstage, I’m thinking about how I can perfect a role that I’m working on. It’s important to give yourself breathing space, to switch off as much as possible. I’m so lucky to have Nick and my family provide that much-needed perspective in my life, as well as many friends who aren’t in the profession. I find that really important, to be reminded of life outside the bubble you can so easily create for yourself when you’re so involved in your work.

What is your favourite work out?

Dancing. It’s physical and an outlet for expression. It’s great to see more adult ballet classes popping up – what a great way to keep your body fit and pliant, and your mind constantly stimulated! From an exercise point-of-view, Pilates is the perfect accompaniment for ballet dancers. I’ve been doing it since I was 12.

What is your best beauty tip?

Choose cruelty-free. Massacring animals for beauty is far from beautiful.

What do you eat on an average day?

I have been vegetarian since age 16 and vegan for the past 2 years. I’ve never felt more energetic in my life. It’s the right thing for my body and mind. For any highly physical person it’s important to fuel yourself wisely. I’ve got a super high metabolism so I find that the best thing that works for me is lots of smaller meals throughout the day in between the three big main meals. Typically I will have homemade supercharged granola with almond milk, a slice of toast with something like avocado/tomato and tahini on multi-seed toast and a soy latte for breakfast; a legume, dark leafy greens and veggie-packed salad for lunch and something like an Indonesian curry for dinner (my Mum is Indonesian and she taught me how to cook) packed with tempeh, tofu and veggies. For the little meals in between it’s a pick and mix from bananas, apples, homemade muesli bars, little sandwiches (I love nut butter), raw nuts and green smoothies. Oh, and the day always finishes with some dark chocolate!

Favourite work out music/song?

When I’m dancing then obviously it would be the music of the ballet. For our daily morning class we have a pianist so that is the soundtrack of my ‘workout’. At Pilates it’s always nice to have something calming and ambient playing in the background.

Your favourite thing to do when you are not working out?

Hanging out with the people I love.

Favourite place you have travelled to?

Indonesia, my second home.

Dream place you’d like to travel to?

India has been at the top of the list for a while.

Fitness goal you dream to reach?

I want to be the best dancer I can be, to realise my full expressive potential with my body whilst it is still fit enough to do so. The lifespan of a dancer is cruelly short – it is rare to dance beyond 40.

How do you see your future?

I hope it will be happy and fulfilled. I dream of taking the transformative magic of dance to those who aren’t fortunate enough to be able to see it for themselves – those living in poverty, for example. Dance is a universal language that everyone should have the opportunity to experience. I also want to continue writing as it is my second love and that is something I can continue to do once my body has given up on me!

What are 3 things you can’t live without?

My husband, my family and friends.

Your favourite photo you ever took?

I really enjoy taking photos, but I’m going to turn this question around a bit and say that our wedding photos hold a special place in my heart. We insisted that there would be no posed shots, so the result was a candid capture of those precious moments that just whoosh by so fast that it’s hard to just ‘be’ and enjoy. Those photos allow me to experience the day all over again.

WAH Fitgirls: Ally May Carey

With 5 years of experience in the fashion industry, it was no surprise when Ally May Carey effortlessly represented WAH’s activewear through her passion for fashion as well as her awesome attitude to a life of health and fitness. Ally defines fashion-forward fitness (so apt to our inspiration in the We Are Handsome office) and is successful in using the strong base in social media that she has created for herself, to promote this to her very supportive fans.

What inspired you to start being active/to be an athlete?

I’ve always lived an active life. As a child my parents had me in basically every sport going and I loved it. We lived in a country town, so weekends were always about sport and afternoons were always swimming training / squad. Because I was such a healthy kid with great role models as parents, it was engrained in me from an early age that you should live a healthy / active lifestyle.

What do you love most about this lifestyle?

I live by the beach with my husband and I love that even after a busy day, we have the solitude of the beach. Living a healthy lifestyle helps with other aspects of your life. It gives me more energy for long days, gives me a clearer head and motivates me when I need it most.

What is a normal day like for you?

A normal day! I’m not sure I have a “normal day”. Each day is always so different – one day I could be shooting, another day I may have back to back meetings, another day I might be interstate working! That’s what I love about my job – it’s always changing.

How do you balance your time?

It’s all about writing lists, planning and making time for the important things. I always make sure I do something with my husband, or if we have been working long hours go for a nice walk to get some fresh ocean air.

What is your favourite workout?

I love strength training – weights, workout bands etc.

A run along the beach is always great too – you don’t need any equipment and you can set your own pace.

What is your best beauty tip?

I know that it’s probably a common one – but it’s seriously what I swear by:

Wash your make-up off of a night – no matter how tired you are

Drink lots of water to flush your system out

What do you eat on an average day?

Breakfast: Porridge or Muesli or Toast with organic peanut butter

Snack: Fruit

Lunch: Salad or Sandwich or Smoothie

Dinner: At the moment I’m loving risotto! My husband makes the yummiest one!

Favourite workout music/song?

I usually make a playlist on Spotify. My workout music is something I wouldn’t generally listen to on a daily basis, but it’s something I can sing along to and have fun with. Workout music is my guilty pleasure… Ha.

Your favourite thing to do when you are not working out?

Exploring, go to the beach or watching scary movies.

Favourite place you have travelled to?

Berlin! I loved the art, the culture and the overall atmosphere. I could easily live there and feel at home straight away.

Dream place you’d like to travel to?

New York and Amalfi Coast! Hopefully in the next year I’ll get to see both! I have so many places I want to travel too.

Fitness goal you dream to reach?

Constant improvements and reaching new PB. Setting personal goals / writing them down is always a great way to reach these – I always tell my readers to do this!

JD took a photo of me late in the afternoon in Berlin – spectacular golden light. Without a doubt my favourite.

WAH Fitgirls: Ashley Freeman

For Ashley Freeman, it’s all about infecting the world with her love for fitness and her desire to help others follow in her tracks of making good lifestyle choices. At We Are Handsome, we fully support this healthy outlook and couldn’t have been more excited about working with Ashley who was looking toned, tanned fit and ready in our activewear showcase; a true WAH health, fun and fitness advocate!

What inspired you to start being active/to be an athlete?

For me, being active is my way of life. I grew up on the Sydney beaches playing every sport I could and I was always outside. Movement, exercise and challenging my body is an essential ingredient to me when it comes to leading a happy life.

What do you love most about this lifestyle?

I love feeling confident and strong. I love feeling comfortable and supported in my own skin. When I’m eating well, exercising regularly, spending a lot of time outdoors and am surrounded by my loved ones I feel incredibley empowered and ready to take on the world.

What is a normal day like for you?

It changes all the time! I’ve just moved to Byron Bay and have a lot of travel coming up this year so right now I’m settling in, focusing on new business ventures and letting the next chapter of my life unfold organically.

How do you balance your time?

Getting my 8 hours sleep and waking up early is essential. I find I can fit so much more in and I find I am more productive in the first half of the day. I live with my partner in an area that inspires me to be outdoors exercising, and also is a hub for healthy/organic produce and natural remedies. I am constantly learning and inspired. Most of all I never bite off more than I can chew. I know myself now and I am easily overwhelmed. I’ve learnt not to rush and to see things through properly.

What is your favourite work out?

I love doing circuit workouts with my kettle bells, battle rope, TRX, skipping rope and anything I can use outdoors eg; chairs, tables, steps. At the moment I love doing 500 rep challenges. I choose 10 exercises which are even between upper body, lower body and core. I do 10 reps of each of the exercises as fast as I can (Hence 100 reps), then take a break and repeat this 4 more times.

What is your best beauty tip?

Vitamin D, natural oils, diving into the ocean, drinking lots of water, getting your blood pumping every day and eating well.

What do you eat on an average day?

I’m a creature of habit. At the moment I’m having oats with blueberries and banana every morning. My lunches and dinners are fairly similar.  Alot of fish, in particular salmon, barramundi, tuna and swordfish with a big, fresh, healthy salad. During the day I’ll snack on fruit, protein bars, tuna cans, carrot and hummus etc.

Favourite work out music/song?

I’m pretty out of date with music! I think the last album I was listening to during a workout was 50 Cent! I generally just workout outdoors or at the beach and enjoy using this time to think.

Spend time outdoors and with my loved ones.

Favourite place you have travelled to?

I can’t answer this question. There are too many places! I’m definitely a warm climate girl though, I don’t deal well with the cold, hence me always leaving haha.

Dream place you’d like to travel to?

Still yet to tick off Hawaii! There are some very powerful places in those islands I’m dying to explore. Hopefully next year!

Fitness goal you dream to reach?

I don’t really have any goals. My only goal is to be happy and healthy. Although I’d love to complete an ultra marathon one day and also a triathlon.

Creative Transformation by Darva Fields

We have seen our prints on surfboards, bicycles, phone covers and even headphones but what Darvá Fields has done has really blown us away.

When he’s not working on his art, Darvá is the manager of a spa resort in Pheonix. We had a chat to him about where he finds his inspiration and what his plans are for the future.

How did you get here? (Why did you start painting on shoes?)

My beautiful mother Valerie sparked my love of fashion. She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and passed along her love of art and the fashion world. I remember as a child, she created acrylic and oil pieces of art that surrounded my bedroom. My favourite was of a circus. One day, I wanted to add my own people into the painting so I took my crayons and went to town! My mother eventually saw what I added to her piece, but instead of being upset, she saw my imagination. From which she taught me how to draw and truly express myself.

There is also a photographer by the name of Scott Schuman who inspires me through his work and creativity of capturing people. Women are beautiful both inside and out. I felt that I could contribute to enhance fashion. As an artist, I decided to use heels and shoes as my blank canvas. I felt it was unique and collaborates with my love of fashion.  Art in motion so to speak…

 

Where do you get the shoes from and what do you do with them? (Describe your process to us)

To tell the truth, I have never bought a pair of shoes to paint. I started off by asking my friends and family for their shoes and it snowballed from there! After posting pictures on social media sites, people began asking me to paint their shoes. From heels that have been tucked away in the closet and forgotten about, to special once in a life time events.

Where do you find inspiration & how did you hear about us?

I always find inspiration in photographs, patterns, and animal prints. I like to stick to colors that the client likes and which would look best on the shoe.  They usually give me creative freedom on the shoe, which is what I enjoy! I also have a huge love of big cats, which is one of the ways I heard about your company. I remember seeing a picture of a phone case on Tumblr that was half of a face of a tiger, and the other half of a lion. I ended up ordering the case and ever since, I have been a huge fan! I really like all the beautiful designs the company has and the amazing photography that enhances it.

What do you do when you’re not painting shoes?

I have a career in the hospitality industry, which helps me to contribute and make positive emotional deposits in others lives. When not at work I spend a lot of time with my family and people that enhance my life. My parents are incredible and always bring an amazing spark to my life. I have two beautiful children who bring me endless joy and are the loves of my life.

 

Where next?

I want to continue focusing on my quality of work and not stress about the quantity. I hope to someday collaborate with an established fashion company that has vision and truly captures the art in motion that is fashion.

Social media superstar and fitness advocate Sjana Elise Earp, from the Gold Coast of Australia, shares with us what it is to live an active, healthy and inspiring lifestyle. What inspired you to start being active/to be an athlete?

I am very blessed, as I actually grew up in a family that were sport lovers and both my parents were very fit/athletic and both of my older brothers and myself have inherited their same adoration for movement, exercise and health! I have done a lot of sport since I can even remember! I remember in primary school I used to wake up at 4:30am, go swimming for two hours before school, then often get picked up during lunchtime to go to a private lessons or sport, then back to school, then after school I would have gymnastics, surf life saving, athletics, netball or swimming again.. and I LOVED IT! I am so so grateful for having parents that supported us kids in our sporting gifts.. It meant I was able to grow in my chosen sports and perform at a very high/competitive and elite level in a lot of things.. Which I truly believe is such an incredible gift to give any child!

What do you love most about this lifestyle?

The feeling of health and wellness.. It’s like your body is constantly fresh and vibrant!

What is a normal day like for you?

Every day is different..

I usually like to get up for sunrise (my favourite part of the day!), and then depending on what priorities, appointments or tasks I have I will shape my day around those.. I try to incorporate yoga, allocate time for preparing healthy, fresh meals, personal development, family time, work and as much adventure as I can!

How do you balance your time?

I figure out my priorities, and then get them done.. I’m a list person, so whether it be mentally or literally, I’m constantly crossing things off lists and getting things done!

What is your favourite work out?

My favourite workout is always incidental! The kind of workout that you have when you are playing with friends, surfing for hours on end, adventuring through a rainforest to find a waterfall or bike riding to a new place.. I thing exercise should be all about doing good for your body because you love it, not punishing it because you hate it.

What is your best beauty tip?

SMILE! THERE IS NOTHING MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN A GENUINE, FRIENDLY SMILE!

What do you eat on an average day?

I don’t follow any kind of “diet” and certainly don’t give myself any restrictions.. I prefer to maintain as much of a healthy relationship with food as I possible can by eating what my body tells me it needs. I listen to my body, and am quite in sync with it.. I eat according to the cravings my body gives me and find this is the best/healthiest way to be 🙂

Favourite work out music/song?

Anything fun and energetic! Something I can dance to!

Your favourite thing to do when you are not working out?

Beach! I think I was meant to be a mermaid!

Fitness goal you dream to reach?

To maintain a body that not only enables me to explore, play and engage in as much fun and energetic activities as possible, but a body that feels strong, powerful and healthy. I give myself constant goals such as half marathons or new yoga postures and I love challenging myself to do these.. But the ultimate, long term goal is to continue to maintain a strong body that best allows me LIVE not just survive..

I try my best to live in the moment.. I believe that everything happens for a reason, , and I have a general direction I wish to head and goals I would like to achieve, but I am more than open to new opportunities and any unexpected pathways that may present along the way! As long as I am constantly helping others, spreading happiness and self developing than I am more than okay to end up wherever life takes me!

Your favourite photo you ever took?

My favourite photo is a photo I had a girlfriend take for me when I was in the Maldives.. It was a photo of me laying down on the Maldivian white sand, with the shadow of a palm tree frond perfectly placed on my back resembling a spine.. the photo went viral and Candice Swanepoel even reposted it on her instagram! The actual image was just a simple iPhone photo, and I wish it was taken on a proper DSLR but I’m more proud of the creativity behind the image haha

Sweet Heavens, Zumbo!

Last week we received the sweetest package from our friend Adriano Zumbo. We have to admit, we couldn’t resist trying each and every flavour of macaron, but most importantly to pair these sweet treats with our swimwear to create some delicious images for you.

Zumbo fell in love with patisserie as a 15 year old and since then he hasn’t stopped pursuing big dream. Today, he has 5 stores through NSW and Victoria and is still growing his empire.

His macarons are unlike other macarons. The flavours are endless – Salted Butter Popcorn, Finger Bun, Cherry Coconut, Choc Marshmallow Pop or for those more brave, there are flavours such as Duck Pancake or even Wasabi & Ginger. We have picked our favourite flavour but rather than trying to influence you, pop in to one of their stores and try for your self. We promise you will love them.

Welcome to Vice, our walk down the memory lane of Miami in the 80’s.  This season we’re all about the heat, the hot & the heart. Lazy afternoons on the promenade, perspiring the days away with endless piña coladas. Let us share with you our VICE

When it comes to island destinations Thailand is my pick, tanned hands down, every time. Sure I’ve not been to all of the of the top 25 beaches in the world as voted on TripAdvisor (I have however made a significant dent in that list) BUT I have been to many corners up and down the many coasts of the land of smiles. So, when it came time to choose a location to shoot our latest collection we chased our vices: smiles, spices, sea, summer and sunshine and headed straight to some of the best places in Thailand. Shooting at

Shooting at AAVA Resort & Spa and Kata Rocks our swim collection popping against idyllic beaches, infinity pools, swaying palms and the incredible vista’s of this unique country.

This season sees label favourites shapes complimented with a bevy of new styles in a palette of sorbet and surreal inspired by Miami in the decadant era of the 80’s. We spent a week shooting, swimming and exploring the intricate and overwhelming Thai beauty – now we’ll let you be the judge of which you’ll pick to spend your day beach or poolside at one of these resorts!

• Delivery is via FedEx Smart Post (with tracking) and generally takes 2-7 business days – it costs $5 USD.
•Express Delivery is via UPS Ground and takes 3 days – it costs $14 USD.
•Lost or stolen postage is not covered by insurance.

    •Customers are responsible for organising the shipment of returns including the cost to send the return back to us. WE ARE HANDSOME is not responsible for the shipment of returns and will not replace or process a return that is lost during shipment. We recommend shipping returns through a tracked service.

 

    •It is not the responsibility of WE ARE HANDSOME to pay or reimburse customers for any government import fees, taxes and/or charges that may be applied to orders. It is the responsibility of customers to be aware of and pay any such costs that their country may apply to imported goods.

 

    •Refunds are made to the credit card that was used to make the original purchase and are for the cost of items only. Shipping costs will not be refunded. Please allow 7 business days for the refund transaction to be completed back onto your card. We will contact you via the email address listed on your order when the refund has taken place.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY GARMENT?

Although our garments may make you feel invincible, the swimsuit itself is rather delicate.

Make sure you follow these easy steps to make sure your piece of We Are Handsome stays with you forever!

  • Use a mild detergent while hand washing it separately in cold water.
  • Pretty please don’t tumble dry, wring, soak or bleach your garment (that’s just cruel), it’s best to let it dry in the shade.
  • Try not to leave it rolled up and wet, make sure you rinse it really well after each use, especially if you’re spending a lot of time frolicking in an infinity pool – or a non-infinity pool for that matter!
  • Please don’t iron or dry-clean it.
  • Also, try to stay away from rough surfaces as it could cause pilling, and we all know that is not a good look.
