Here at We Are Handsome we often have the absolute pleasure of travelling around the world following an endless summer. With travel comes the valuable experience of seeing other cultures and ways of life. It genuinely broadens the mind and provides you with experiences to grow from as a person. One of the most valuable lessons I have learnt from travelling especially in third world countries, is not to take for granted our way of life back home. When faced with the reality of the immense poverty; 1.4 billion people struggle on a day to day basis to provide the basic human needs in life, it certainly puts things into perspective and little worries become instantly trivial.
It has also provoked the humanitarian within me and in my day to day efforts from fashion, blogging to teaching, I try to do my part by being informed of the current global climate and all that it encompasses from politics, economics, wars and famine. Having family whose background is from a third world country, the issue of extreme poverty and inequality is one I am an advocate for.
The awesome team at the Global Poverty Project and the Cotton On Foundation, have put together an initiative, Global Citizen, which allows individuals to become part of a movement, that endeavours to help end extreme poverty and inequality around the world. It focuses on fostering the knowledge, awareness and advocacy of 4 main issues; Education, Health, Women’s Equality and Global partnerships.
Why these 4 you ask? Well, education provides the opportunity to learn knowledge and skills, which are valuable for living in the current global climate. Having trained health care workers can help provide basic access to medical advice, medicines and vaccines. Empowering women to be independent and considered equal ensures the future of this world. Finally without global partnerships it will be impossible to achieve all of the above.
With all this in mind you may be asking; How can I become a Global Citizen? Well for starters purchase the very cool Global T-shirt as seen on the likes of Miss Lara Bingle, Elle Ferguson and Tash Sefton. Then, jump onto the Global citizen website and follow the prompts to earn points. Basically undertaking any number of the following will help make a difference:
- Watching a short video on an issue related to extreme poverty
- Sharing a video about extreme poverty on social networks
- Adding your voice to a petition
- Buying Fairtrade products
- Calling your representatives, or emailing your representatives
We absolutely love this initiative at We are Handsome and urge you to do all that you can to help. Be a person who cares about the world, who makes a difference no matter how big or how small.
Remember, it takes a village.
