We are excited to present the next installment of The Handsome Project. Each month we’ll showcase an amazing young photographer who blows our minds, shoots our stuff and is all together fantastic. Read on to see the rest of Stephanie’s WAH photoshoot and interview!
How did you get to here? (What’s your photographer history?)
By passion I started photography and video when I was 14. I grew up and went to school in Cannes to study cinema. At the age of 18 I moved to Paris. At my photography school I experimented with a lot of techniques in the darkroom. After my school I was an assistant in a studio in Paris and I started to be a model with Ford model Europe. This gave me the opportunity to travel and start to shoot a lot of models and make my folio, and then very quickly I started to work for fashion, music and advertising in Paris. And recently… love brought me to Melbourne!
Are you a self-taught photographer or did you have a mentor/teacher that showed you the ropes?
No mentor with rope, I don’t like the idea so much … just the experience of life!
What keeps you enthused in the photography industry?
The freedom, talented people and live my passion every day!
Describe your approach in three words:
Ou la la!
Black & white or colour?
Both! It’s like asking me croissant or cheese!
Do you prefer film or digital? Why?
I love film & Polaroid but digital is fun too, no matter of the format the subject is most important.
Describe your photographic approach:
My approach is pretty relaxed, I general get inspired by a subject and like to let place for improvisation.
I will say Lee Miller for her amazing career.
Don’t have any favourite photograph, I have so many different style of photographs that I like and inspired by, the list is long and very eclectic!
What turns you on?
Cheese plate & good wine, my beautiful husband.
What turns you off?
How do you decide on locations & subjects for your shoots ?
Each project has a completely different process. So there are no rules really, I love to experiment with new things every time.
If you could take your photography in any direction without fear of failure or rejection, where would it lead? What new things would you try?
I already had the opportunity to publish a book and curate 3 exhibitions in Paris, so I would love to continue that in Melbourne. I have a new project in mind I just need to find the time now!
Best advice you’ve ever received.
A proverb “Tout vient à point à qui sait attendre.” All things come to those who can wait. Good things take time!
What is the one quality you think is needed for a photographer to be great?
Honesty to the project and the subject.
Where to next ?
France to visit my family and friends!
We Are Handsome would like to thank Stef for this shoot! We’re not sure how Erinn moves like that, but she looks gorgeous in WAH!
