Interview w/ Claire Wallman.
How did you get to here? (What’s your photographer history?)
I started out shooting corporate events. It wasn’t my 1st choice of photography but I had to get into the game some how. I then had the great opportunity of working in a studio full of inspirational people that really helped me get to where I am today. This was then followed by a few years of assisting some influential photographers and the rest is history. Its been a long process, late hours and really hard work but 100% worth every minute of it.
Are you a self-taught photographer or did you have a mentor/teacher that showed you the ropes?
It has been a bit of both. I have learned almost everything on the job and assisting some fantastic photographers. Naming just one mentor is too hard as they have all helped me in numerous ways.
When did you decide, photography was something you just had to do?
From day 1!!! It was always a dream of mine to shoot fashion photography, and to give people that same experience I get from viewing an image that gives you that wow factor . Once I finally kicked my butt into gear, its just been onwards and upwards for me.
Favourite photograph?
There are so many to choose from, as I am always finding new inspiration for my shoots. But one I came across recently was ‘The Lady Who Fell To Earth’ shot by Tim Walker. I love his ideas, concepts and creativity.
Favourite photographer?
Once again there are so many, but at the moment loving David LaChapelle. Also loving Tim Walker, he’s an amazing photographer.
Describe your photographic approach in three words.
Zealous, Ambitious, Crazy
How do you decide on locations & subjects for your shoots?
I love finding new and exciting locations but it depends on what im shooting. Finding the 6 locations for the handsome project was exciting…but a long day driving from shot to shot. I loved people’s reactions when we walked into the bowling ally, wearing swimwear and carrying giant inflatable pool toys haha.
Shot/Shoot you’re most proud of?
Honestly the “Handsome Project shoot. I just had so much fun with it!!
Do you prefer film or digital? Why?
Love film but couldn’t imagine shooting with it these days.
Favourite camera?
My bad boy Canon 5D mark II
Studio or On Location?
Location Location Location!!!!!! No argument there.
Black & White or Colour?
Colour is definitely the go.
If you could take your photography in any direction without fear of failure or rejection, where would it lead? What new things would you try?
I would…….no let me rephrase that….i will travel the world, photograph amazing models in amazing locations and get published in all the high end fashion magazines. I am already heading in the direction I want to be going. It’s now just a matter of climbing my way to the top. It’s my passion and love for photography that I feel, creates these amazing opportunities for me.
What turns you on?
The amazing teams I put together. The talent I’m surrounded by at each shoot just blows me away each time.
What turns you off?
Rain….it cancels my location shoots sometimes L
Where to next?
I don’t know where to next, its all a part of the adventure. As long as I’m surrounded by all these talented people I have met along the way, and I get to keep creating fun and crazy shoots. Moving in the right direction, I’m a very happy girl 🙂
