We are incredibly excited to present the next installment of The Handsome Project. Each month we’ll showcase an amazing young photographer who blows our minds, shoots our stuff and is all together fantastic. Read on to see the rest of Amber’s WAH photoshoot and interview!

How did you get to here? (What’s your photographer history?)
I discovered photography (as an art form) in 2006, the first semester of my senior year of college in Florida. I was studying business. I spent most of my time in those classes daydreaming (or let’s be honest, sleeping.. don’t judge me!) so it was pretty exciting to finally find something I truly loved that I was actually quite good at. I moved from my small hometown to Los Angeles in 2009 and started building a career from scratch.

Are you a self-taught photographer or did you have a mentor/teacher that showed you the ropes?
Self taught, though I have been (and continue to be) inspired by photographers at all levels.

How did you come up with the concept behind your Handsome Project shoot?
My stylist and I scouted locations the week prior and planned which suits would work best with each location in terms of style and color. We shot guerrilla style throughout Skid Row and parts of the Arts District in downtown Los Angeles. The lack of environmental control added an element of excitement and energy to the shoot.

What keeps you enthused in the photography industry?
The ability to never stop learning and fine tuning my skills as I work towards becoming a master of my craft.

Describe your approach in three words.
Exhibition of mood.

Black & white or colour?
I have a soft spot for black and white film. Otherwise I mostly enjoy working with color.

Do you prefer film or digital? Why?
I love everything about film. I like that it makes you think a bit more before pressing the shutter. I like that it has to be wound up and kept in a place of complete darkness until it’s ready to be developed. I like the entire process, however tedious it may be, of developing film. And probably most of all, I like the surprise. The excitement you feel as the image appears for the first time. In a world of instant gratification, it’s charming. Digital looks like a photograph. Film looks like a memory. With all of that said, my digital to film ratio is probably 10 to 1.

Favourite camera?
I’ve had some great times with my grandfather’s crappy old Canon AE-1. This camera taught me the basics. Nothing fancy but it holds a certain sentiment. I’ve also recently acquired a beautiful black vintage Polaroid SX-70. It’s magical.

Favourite photographer?
There are so many photographers that I am inspired by. To name a few: Alex Prager, Yelena Yemchuk, Irving Penn, Paolo Roversi.

What turns you on?
Ryan Gosling (RyGo). Totally kidding.. sort of. Seriously though, well-directed passion and a kind and generous heart. Knowledge. Truth. Love. People that are aware of the bigger picture.

What turns you off?
Apathy, injustice, greed.

How do you decide on locations & subjects for your shoots?
Most of my ideas are mood based. I’ve never been good at hiding my feelings (hello “no filterâ€�) and my photography is no exception. Sometimes ideas randomly pop into my head throughout the day and I jot them down in my fancy notebook. I’ve even sourced ideas from dreams a few times. Those ideas are usually odd, highly conceptual, and require a lot of production/props so I haven’t brought those to fruition just yet. But they are written in my fancy notebook! Someday…

If you could take your photography in any direction without fear of failure or rejection, where would it lead? What new things would you try?
I’m not sure how this is going to work, but I’d like to find a way to incorporate my photography career with giving back in a big way. This will probably involve a lot of travel. I love what I do but a large part of what drives me is the desire to have resources + a platform of influence to help those in need and speak up for those who aren’t heard. I also really like cats.. maybe someday I’ll produce a 365 daily kitten calendar. /_/

Best advice you’ve ever received.
Shoot. A lot. All of the time. I think the exact words were, “You shoot, and you shoot, and you f****** shoot some more� by a nice French fellow. I’m not sure if this counts as advice but I also really like this quote by Helen Keller, “Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.�

What is the one quality you think is needed for a photographer to be great?
Vision – and with that comes passion. When you truly have vision it gives you a sense of purpose and the drive to never give up. You have to be good and you have to really want it.

Delivery in United States

• Delivery is via FedEx Smart Post (with tracking) and generally takes 2-7 business days – it costs $5 USD.
•Express Delivery is via UPS Ground and takes 3 days – it costs $14 USD.
•Lost or stolen postage is not covered by insurance.

All international shipping is processed via Priority International Shipping.

Shipment is between 3-21 days depending on your location.

Returns and Orders Policy

    •You must notify WE ARE HANDSOME within 7 calendar days of accepting delivery of the order AND arrange return of the item/s within 7 calendar days after receiving our email authorizing the return.

    •Refunds are made to the credit card that was used to make the original purchase and are for the cost of items only. Shipping costs will not be refunded. Please allow 7 business days for the refund transaction to be completed back onto your card. We will contact you via the email address listed on your order when the refund has taken place.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY GARMENT?

Although our garments may make you feel invincible, the swimsuit itself is rather delicate.

Make sure you follow these easy steps to make sure your piece of We Are Handsome stays with you forever!

  • Use a mild detergent while hand washing it separately in cold water.
  • Pretty please don’t tumble dry, wring, soak or bleach your garment (that’s just cruel), it’s best to let it dry in the shade.
  • Try not to leave it rolled up and wet, make sure you rinse it really well after each use, especially if you’re spending a lot of time frolicking in an infinity pool – or a non-infinity pool for that matter!
  • Please don’t iron or dry-clean it.
  • Also, try to stay away from rough surfaces as it could cause pilling, and we all know that is not a good look.

RETURNS and ORDERS POLICY

  • You must notify WE ARE HANDSOME within 7 calendar days of accepting delivery of the order AND arrange return of the item/s within 7 calendar days after receiving our email authorizing the return.

 

  • To notify WE ARE HANDSOME, email your proof of purchase, being an invoice or email confirmation from WE ARE HANDSOME, to our customer service team at customerlove@wearehandsome.com .

 

  • All sale purchases are final and cannot be returned (including exchanges, credit notes and refunds). We kindly ask that you carefully consider your items before purchasing. Sale returns will only be accepted if the merchandise is faulty or wrongly described.

 

  • During sale periods where a discount code is used, any orders placed prior to the start time of the sale will not be eligible for the discount. THIS INCLUDES CURRENT SALE: 10TH Birthday Sale

 

  • Item/s must be unworn, unwashed and in the original sellable condition. All labels, packaging and hygiene stickers must be attached and in their original condition.

 

  • Customers are responsible for organising the shipment of returns including the cost to send the return back to us. WE ARE HANDSOME is not responsible for the shipment of returns and will not replace or process a return that is lost during shipment. We recommend shipping returns through a tracked service.

 

  • It is not the responsibility of WE ARE HANDSOME to pay or reimburse customers for any government import fees, taxes and/or charges that may be applied to orders. It is the responsibility of customers to be aware of and pay any such costs that their country may apply to imported goods.

 

  • Refunds are made to the credit card that was used to make the original purchase and are for the cost of items only. Shipping costs will not be refunded. Please allow 7 business days for the refund transaction to be completed back onto your card. We will contact you via the email address listed on your order when the refund has taken place.

 

  • For exchanges, we will require a shipping payment to be made prior to re-shipment. We will request this payment from you via PayPal. The charges are as follows:
    • USA Domestic $10
    • International Express $15 (International costs will be in the relevant currency)

 

  • Due to the select nature of our product, we cannot guarantee the availability of merchandise for exchanges

 

  • Once your return order has been received your order will be processed within 7 business days. During holiday periods/sale seasons it may take longer.

 

  • We do not accept returns from purchases made through our stockists. We can only process returns on purchases that were processed through our e-boutique.

 

  • Stock quantities are not updated in real time, and therefore occasionally an item may be sold out at time of purchase. If you purchase an item that is sold out, you will be notified by email as soon as possible and offered a suitable replacement or full refund.

 

  • Delivery delays may occur during high volume and peak periods or due to unforeseen reasons. During these times, please allow an additional 7 business days for your order to be delivered. Russian/ South African customers may need more patience by reason of the local delivery system and customs­­.
